Karni Mata Temple also known as the Rat Temple is a unique and intriguing Hindu temple located in Deshnoke, a small town in the Bikaner district of Rajasthan, India. This temple is renowned for its resident population of rats, considered sacred and worshipped by the devotees who visit the temple. The temple's history, significance, and the unusual aspect of rat worship make it a fascinating destination for tourists and pilgrims alike.

History: The history of Karni Mata Temple dates back to the 15th century when it was originally dedicated to Karni Mata, a revered sage and mystic believed to be an incarnation of the goddess Durga. Karni Mata, born in 1387, was known for her miraculous powers and her selfless devotion to the welfare of society. Legends surround her, recounting tales of her divine interventions and compassionate acts. According to one popular legend, Karni Mata requested Yama, the god of death, to revive the son of a grieving storyteller. When Yama refused, Karni Mata, displaying her divine powers, brought the child back to life. However, she transformed him into a rat, making him and his descendants the first members of the rat population in the temple.

Significance: The primary specialty of Karni Mata Temple lies in its unique worship of rats, which are considered to be the incarnations of Karni Mata and her devotees. The temple is home to thousands of rats, and devotees believe that spotting a white rat, which is rare among the predominantly black rats, is especially auspicious. The rats, also known as "kabbas," are fed and cared for by the temple priests and devotees. Pilgrims visiting the temple often offer food, grains, and milk to these rats, considering it an act of devotion and seeking blessings from Karni Mata. The rats freely roam around the temple complex, and it is believed that if a devotee accidentally steps on a rat, they must make a gold or silver rat as a form of penance. The significance of rat worship in Karni Mata Temple is rooted in the belief that these rodents carry the souls of the devotees. It is believed that after death, the souls of Karni Mata's followers are reincarnated as rats until they are ready to be reborn as humans.

As a Tourist Attraction: Karni Mata Temple has gained international fame and is a major tourist attraction for those seeking unique and offbeat experiences. The temple's distinct feature of rat worship sets it apart from other Hindu temples and draws curious travelers from around the world. Tourists visiting the temple can witness the surreal sight of thousands of rats freely moving about the temple complex. The atmosphere is both fascinating and eerie, as the rodents are considered sacred and are treated with reverence by the visitors.

The architecture of the temple is another aspect that attracts tourists. Built in traditional Nagar style of temple architecture, the temple features intricately carved marble panels, silver doors, and a stunning facade. The inner sanctum, where the idol of Karni Mata is enshrined, is adorned with colorful decorations and offerings from devotees.

Challenges and Controversies: While Karni Mata Temple is a popular tourist destination, it has faced challenges and controversies over the years. The presence of a large number of rats poses hygiene concerns, and despite efforts to maintain cleanliness, the temple has been criticized for its unhygienic conditions. Animal rights activists have raised concerns about the well-being of the rats and the ethical implications of keeping them in captivity. However, temple authorities argue that the rats are considered sacred and are well-cared for, with regular feeding and veterinary attention. Controversies also surround the practice of rat worship itself, with some questioning the rationale behind considering these rodents as carriers of human souls. Despite these debates, the temple continues to attract a steady stream of visitors who are fascinated by its cultural and religious significance.

Festivals and Celebrations: Karni Mata Temple is a hub of festivities, especially during the annual Karni Mata Fair held in the Hindu month of Chaitra (March-April). The fair attracts a large number of devotees and tourists who come to witness the grand celebrations. The temple is adorned with lights, decorations, and a lively atmosphere prevails throughout the town. During the fair, traditional folk performances, music, and dance add to the cultural vibrancy of the event. Pilgrims undertake long journeys to seek the blessings of Karni Mata and participate in the rituals and ceremonies held during the fair.

Preservation and Promotion: Recognizing the historical and cultural significance of Karni Mata Temple, efforts have been made to preserve and promote this unique religious site. Government initiatives, along with contributions from devotees and well-wishers, have been directed towards maintaining the temple's infrastructure, ensuring cleanliness, and addressing the concerns related to the welfare of the rats. Tourism promotion has also played a role in bringing attention to Karni Mata Temple. The Rajasthan tourism board actively markets the temple as a must-visit destination for those seeking an authentic and unconventional experience in the state.
